A Martinez firefighter was taken to a hospital this morning after suffering second-degree burns while extinguishing a house fire.
John Franklin was transported to Doctors Hospital after a burning roof at 260 Callaway Drive collapsed as he tried to douse a fire in the attic.
Officials at the scene said embers fell into his firefighting suit and onto his neck. A preliminary investigation indicates the fire started at about 9 a.m. when lightning struck the building during a thunderstorm, said Danny Kuhlmann, a battalion chief for Martinez-Columbia Fire Rescue.
No one was home at the time, and neighbors were attempting to contact the home's owner.
