VATICAN CITY - Pope Benedict XVI has accepted the resignation of Monsignor David Foley, the bishop of Birmingham, Ala., the Vatican said Tuesday.
Following church rule, Foley had submitted his resignation in February when he turned 75, but had to wait until it was officially approved.
Foley had announced his resignation April 7, in the period between Pope John Paul II's death and the election of Benedict, but later said his announcement was premature and that the Vatican had not yet ruled on it.
There was no immediate announcement of a successor for Foley, who had served the northern Alabama diocese for 11 years.
