Mrs. Carolyn Attaway (THOMSON, Ga.)



THOMSON, Ga. - Mrs. Carolyn Victoria Corbitt Attaway, 505 Cobbham Road, Thomson, entered into eternal rest on May 9, 2005 at University Hospital, Augusta, GA. She was the daughter of the late Zilphia Still and the late Elisha Still, of Olar, SC. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dean Corbitt, her daughter, Joan Matthews, and her stepson, Barker Dean Corbitt. Mrs. Attaway is survived by her husband, Roger Attaway, Jr. of Thomson, GA; daughters, Lynn Bishop of Thomson, Gaye (Andy) Potate of Atlanta, GA, Penny (Jennifer) Corbitt of Miami, FL; sons, Phil (Peggy) Corbitt, Bob Corbitt, both of Thomson; stepson, Roddy (Jean) Attaway and stepdaughter, Rita (Stewart) Ray, both of Evans, GA; and twenty grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. In addition, Mrs. Attaway unofficially adopted (and they adopted her in return) several other "children", of which Liz Smith, Peggy Poole, Vivian Doughty, and Patricia Lokey, all of Thomson, Brenda Vaneigh of Gib son, GA Patti Evans of Columbia, SC, Donna Wellmaker of Augusta, GA, and Betty Ann Norris of Greenville, SC are but a few of her enormous extended family. Mrs. Attaway was born in Bamberg County, SC, on June 22, 1919, but, at an early age, her family moved to Savannah, GA, where her parents ran a boarding house for many years. It was at this boarding house that she met her future husband, Dean Corbitt. They moved to Crescent City, FL and began what was to be a large family. In 1956, her family moved to Louisville, GA, and later to Thomson, GA, where they operated convenience stores and a trailer park and lived for the remainders of their lives. Mrs. Attaway was always a mother and homemaker first and foremost, but she also enjoyed painting, gardening, and decorating. She was especially fond of old, classic movies and beautiful music of all genres. She was a very sweet and gentle lady, who graced the lives of all who knew her. She will be profoundly missed. Services will be held at Beg gs Funeral Home Chapel, at 11:00am, on Thursday, May 12th with Rev. John Cook officiating. Interment will follow at Westview Cemetery. Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Terry and Tommy Bishop, Tony, Scott, and Brian Corbitt and her great-grandson, Patrick Cooper.
