Mr. Allen M. Hobbs (NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C.)



NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. - A memorial service for Mr. Allen M. Hobbs will be held on Thursday, May 12, 2005 at 2:00 PM in the sanctuary of Covenant Presbyterian Church with Dr. John B. Rogers, Jr. officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 1:00 PM until the hour of the service. A private burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery with Harry and Bryant Company of Charlotte, NC in charge of arrangements. Allen was born in Charlotte, NC on March 27, 1918. He attended local schools and NC State University. Upon graduation in 1941 he was commissioned a 2nd Lt. in the US Army and immediately went on active duty. He served with the 751st Tank Battalion in England, Africa and Italy, receiving the Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. He graduated from the US Army Command and General Staff College and the Armed Forces Staff College, and retired with the rank of Colonel. He was President of Hobbs Plumbing Company from 1950 to 1977, and served as the Presiden t of the N.C. Association of Plumbing, Heating and Cooling Contractors, President of the N.C. State University Alumni Association of Mecklenburg, and President of the Kiwanis Club of Charlotte. Allen was an Elder Emeritus of Covenant Presbyterian Church, and a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity, Military Order of the World Wars, Reserve Officers Association, and Joppa Lodge, Scottish Rite and Oasis Temple, 32 degree Mason. Allen was preceded in death by his wives, Michal Greathouse Hobbs, Nancy Reid Hobbs, Eileen Friesen Hobbs, and Elizabeth Lyons Hobbs. He is survived by four sons, Dr. Stephen H. Hobbs and wife Sandy, North Augusta, SC, William A. Hobbs, Denver, CO, Dr. David T. Hobbs and wife Donna, North Augusta, SC, and Charles E. Hobbs and wife Angie, Winston-Salem, NC; a sister, Margaret H. Rodgers, Venice, FL; a brother, Thomas H. Hobbs, Charlotte, NC; eight step children, David Putnam, Jacksonville, FL, Charles R. Putnam, Charlotte, NC, Janet L. Tuck, Charlotte, NC, Karen L ewis, Boone, NC, Stephen G. Lewis, Charlotte, NC, Brian Barksdale, Charlotte, NC, Beverly Barksdale, Charlotte, NC, and Thomas Lyons, Hershey, PA; nine grandchildren, Ansley, Allen, Tia, Sara, Stephen, Michal, Jenna, Melissa, and Matthew and five great grandchildren, Colby, Chase, Cade, Casen and Brynne.
