Slugger leaves game after being beaned

BOSTON - Manny Ramirez left Monday night's game against Oakland after being beaned, the second straight day the Red Sox slugger was removed after being hit by a pitch in the first inning.

Dan Haren's 81 mph first pitch to Ramirez struck him on the left side of the batting helmet. Boston's left fielder kept his feet, then went down to one knee as manager Terry Francona and trainer Jim Rowe came to check on him.

Then they all went to the dugout. Jay Payton pinch ran for Ramirez and went into left field in the top of the second.

On Sunday, Ramirez was hit in the left thigh by a pitch from Seattle's Joel Pineiro in the opener of a doubleheader. He stayed in the game until Payton pinch hit for him in the fourth, then took his spot in left field. In the second game, Ramirez pinch hit in the ninth, striking out for the last out of the Mariners' 6-4 win.
