South Carolina edges Auburn



COLUMBIA, S.C. - South Carolina held off a late rally by Auburn to win 8-7 Sunday in Southeastern Conference play.

Auburn trailed 8-2 going into the eighth inning and scored three runs in the eighth. The Gamecocks were able to hold the Tigers to two runs in the ninth for the win.

The Gamecocks (32-12, 12-9 SEC) got home runs from Phil Disher, Brendan Winn and Neil Giesler. It was Winn's 10th home run of the season. Each also had two hits and two RBIs for the game.

Clete Thomas had three hits, including his seventh home run of the season, and two RBIs for the Tigers (27-19, 9-12).

Jason Fletcher (5-5) struck out five in five innings for the win. Brent Marsh struck out three in the final two innings to get his 10th save of the season.

Cliff Mullins (1-1) gave up two runs on four hits for the loss. In all, the Gamecocks got 16 hits off five Auburn pitchers.
