Spring is the time to get those summer- and fall-flowering bulbs in the ground. Here are a few tips from the Clemson Extension Cooperative Extension Service for happy and successful planting.

  • When buying bulbs, look for ones that are firm and blemish-free. Large bulbs produce larger flowers.

  • Summer-flowering bulbs should be planted in the spring when frost is no longer a danger. The soil temperature should be at least 55 degrees. Bulbs planted in colder soil might rot before they can sprout.

  • Bulbs need well-drained soil and plenty of water while growing.

  • Some tender summer-flowering bulbs, such as caladiums and tuberous begonias, should be harvested and stored before the first fall frost. Allow the bulbs to air-dry for one to two days and store them in a cool, dry place for planting next spring.

    Popular varieties

  • Dahlias come in almost every color and prefer full sun and well-drained soil. Dahlias bloom from midsummer until frost.

  • Gladioli are often grown as cut flowers and grow best in full sun and moist, well-drained soil. Space planting time a week or so apart to have glads in bloom all summer.

  • Cannas are popular because of their extended flowering period and luxurious foliage. Although most cannas grow 3 to 6 feet tall, new dwarf varieties might reach only about 2 feet. Cannas bloom from early summer until frost if you remove old blossoms regularly so they don't set seed.

  • Lilies come in about 80 species and are available in white, yellow, red, pink , orange, maroon and bicolors. Lilies need well-drained soil in an area that receives sun or part shade.

    Back in time

    Today in regional history:

    March 18, 1979

AIKEN -- Well And Good, a 3 -year-old gray colt from the Bwamazon Farm, surged from dead last to take the coveted City of Aiken Cup in the Aiken Trials Saturday.

The colt was last out of the gate as the Helen McGlashan-John Waller-owned Michell's Gregg, a 4 -year-old gelding, jumped out to an early lead. It was followed by Henryville; then by Good and Early, another Bwamazon-owned gray ; and then by Circle Plum, Guillermo , and Well and Good.

The race, the seventh of the day, was a fitting climax to a sunny St. Patrick's Day which saw horses from the Aiken stables give the large and enthusiastic crowd its money's worth. The field was small, due in part to the recent bad weather and partly to minor bronchial ailments which hit horses from Bwamazon Farms and Paxon Stable.
