Police say motorist hit, dragged woman

AIKEN - The Aiken County Sheriff's Office is looking for a man who they say drove his car over a Windsor woman and dragged her 75 feet across a convenience store parking lot.

Timothy C. Beard, 44, of the 1500 block of Joyner Pond Road in Aiken, faces charges of assault and battery with intent to kill.

Authorities say Mr. Beard was approached Friday by Crystal Pelt, 26, of the 400 block of Cedar Road, at the Windsor General Store on U.S. Highway 78.

Ms. Pelt was hanging signs seeking information about her missing dog, sheriff's Lt. Michael Frank said. She had been told by one of her neighbors that Mr. Beard was in her neighborhood the day her dog went missing, and she spotted him at the store.

As she approached him, Mr. Beard got in his car, ran her over and dragged her across the parking lot before fleeing, Lt. Frank said.

She was taken to Medical College of Georgia Hospital with extensive injuries and remains in critical condition, a spokeswoman said.

Mr. Beard is described as white, 6 feet 1 inch tall, weighing about 200 pounds, with brown hair and hazel eyes.

Anyone with information on Mr. Beard's whereabouts is asked to contact Investigator Stacey Prince at (800) 922-9709.
