Renew the penny tax

Columbia County voters should keep in mind - as they troop to the polls today to vote on whether to extend their school system's local penny sales tax until 2012 - that if passage fails, they will be starving their schools of vital resources.

Excellent schools is a key reason why Columbia County is growing so fast, which explains why renewing the 1-cent sales tax is critically important - not only to sustain education excellence, but also to keep up economic growth and increase property values.

Without the penny tax to fund vital capital improvement projects, it will be impossible to accommodate the huge enrollment growth - about 2,500 new pupils - expected between now and 2012. Columbia Countians who value their education system must turn out in force today to renew the penny tax.
