USC Aiken beats Catawba in 10th

Mark Joehnk's two-out single in the 10th inning gave USC Aiken an 8-7 victory over No. 23 Catawba at Roberto Hernandez Stadium in Aiken.

USC Aiken starter Steve Dunham of Evans allowed two runs in the first inning, then settled down. He went seven innings, allowing seven hits and three earned runs while striking out 10.

Casey Derhak and Zach Cooper each had two hits for the Pacers.

USC Aiken (7-3) and Catawba (12-4) play the second game of the three-game set today at 1 p.m.

  • In Columbia, fifth-ranked South Carolina ran its record to
  • 7-0 with an 8-3 victory over Niag ara in the first of a three-game set.

    Senior right-hander Aaron Rawl went six innings, allowed two earned runs and improved his record to 3-0.

    Jon Willard had three RBI for the Gamecocks. He had a two-run double and a bases-loaded walk.

  • In Atlanta, Wes Hodges hit two home runs, and Jason Neighborgall pitched six strong innings to lead Georgia Tech to an 11-6 win over Rutgers.
  • The Scarlet Knights (3-1) cut the lead to 3-2 in the fifth inning on a Todd Frazier run-scoring single.

    But the Yellow Jackets (7-1) responded with an eight-run sixth.

    Ex-Georgia back to make appearances

    Former University of Georgia starting fullback Jeremy Thomas will be signing autographs today at two area restaurants.

    Thomas will be at Dudley's Dawghouse, 4020 Washington Road , from noon to 4 p.m. and at Somewhere In Augusta, 2701 Washington Road , from 8 p.m. to midnight.

    The Loganville, Ga., native is probably best remembered for his touchdown catch in January's 24-21 victory over Wisconsin in the Outback Bowl. Thomas caught a deflected ball and rumbled into the end zone for a 24-yard score in one of the bowl season's most memorable plays.

    Autographed pictures will be $5, with proceeds going to the start-up of the Palmetto Dragons semi-pro football team, which will be starting play in the Southern Football League in July.

    Ljubicic still has Henman's number

    In Dubai, United Arab Emi¤rates, Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia beat third-seeded Tim Henman

    7-5, 6-4 for the fourth time in a row in a rain-marred quarterfinal of the Dubai Open.

    In the only other quarterfinal possible on the day, fifth-seeded Tommy Robredo of Spain topped Nicolas Kiefer of Germany 6-4, 6-4.

    The two remaining quarterfinals between two-time defending champion Roger Federer and seventh-seeded Mikhail Youzhny of Russia, and fourth-seeded Andre Agassi and No. 6 Nikolay Davydenko of Russia, were postponed until today because of persistent rain.

  • In Doha, Qatar, top-seeded Amelie Mauresmo lost a chance to claim the No. 1 ranking in women's tennis when she was upset by Australian Alicia Molik in the rain-marred semifinals of the Qatar Open.
  • The French world No. 2 was one win away from passing top-ranked American Lindsay Davenport. But the fourth-seeded Molik won 7-6 (11), 6-1 in a match delayed by heavy rain for almost five hours.

    Softball

    Lady Pacers earn sweep of Newberry

    In Aiken, Stacie Oakley broke her school record for strikeouts to highlight USC Aiken's doubleheader sweep of Newberry.

    The Lady Pacers (7-1) won the opener 4-3 behind 15 strikeouts by Oakley (3-0), one more than her record.

    Ashley Garnett had the game-winning hit, a run-scoring single in the seventh.

    USC Aiken won the nightcap 5-2, rallying for three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

    Starter JoAnn Jones (2-1) went the distance for USC Aiken.

    The Lady Pacers' Karleen Haynes had two hits and two RBI, giving her four hits and three RBI in the doubleheader.
