Barry Bonds*?

It would be poetic justice if every pitcher he faces this year walks Barry Bonds intentionally - and denies him the record-breaking home runs he craves - until he agrees to answer to his public regarding his alleged steroid use.

The combative San Francisco Giant slugger, who at 703 career home runs is breathing down Babe Ruth's and Hank Aaron's necks - wants to dodge the questions like a high-and-tight fastball. While meeting reporters at spring training this week, he called them liars, and claimed the steroid stories swirling around him are "old stuff. It's like watching Sanford and Son."

Well, since he has never answered the questions, it cannot possibly be old news. All we know is leaked grand jury testimony that indicated Bonds admitted using steroids without knowing what they were.

When asked this week whether steroids were "cheating," Bonds said, unbelievably, "I don't know what cheating is." Right.

Then, most irrationally, Bonds played the race card - claiming the scrutiny he's under is because he's a black man chasing Babe Ruth's record.

Right. Except that it's not Ruth's record anymore. And Hank Aaron is descended from the British crown?

Do steroids affect your ability to think clearly? Or has he just been beaned once too often?

Until we know whether his accomplishments have been steroid-enhanced, Barry Bonds should not just have an asterisk by his name - it should be printed on his forehead so he can see it in the mirror.
