Today in regional history:
Feb. 22, 1965
"He wasn't used to seeing a lion sitting on the side of the road ñ that's why he called the sheriff."
Mrs. Helen McKinnon, in a matter-of-fact tone of voice, explained all the hullaballoo Sunday night at Hal's Kitchen on Peach Orchard Road.
A passing motorist, who, like most of us, definitely is not accustomed to seeing lions on the highway right-of-way, saw one at 10:36 p.m.
"It's very simple," said Mrs. McKinnon, restaurant owner and zoo keeper. "Cindy (that's her cub's name) likes to sit and watch cars go by. She never gets out of calling distance.
"I always let the cubs go out in the daytime so they can play."
