Regarding Greg Rickabaugh's Feb. 14 article, "Local college figures are low": I started my higher education after high school, but did not finish because that was not what I wanted to do at the time. However, I returned to Augusta State University in 2001 and am preparing to graduate in May.
In defense of the ASU professors and their programs, anyone who wants to do the required work can graduate. Students as well as citizens must take personal responsibility for their own lives and decisions.
Every semester I spend at ASU, I see students fail to attend class - not just occasionally, but repeatedly - and they fail to do their work on time. Having fun with their friends is, to them, more important that their school work.
This makes me wonder how these young people hope to hold a job in the real world where work ethics reflect life habits. For a complete analysis of low graduation rates, I ask Mr. Rickabaugh to compare class attendance rates with graduation rates.
