Jaguars' rally earns win in extra innings

No. 12 Augusta State scored six runs in the bottom of the ninth, then got another run in the bottom of the 10th to stun No. 9 Columbus State, 12-11 in the Peach Belt Conference opener for both teams.

Kevin Kelley and Brandon Sumlin both had three hits for Augusta State (4-1), while Sam Barth went 2-for-5 to extend his school-record hitting streak to 3 9 games.

The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was suspended in the sixth inning due to darkness. The game, which Augusta State leads 6-4, will resume at noon today, and the scheduled game will follow.

  • USC Aiken had two home runs, but USC Upstate countered with six doubles for a 9-5 victory over the Pacers in the teams' Peach Belt Conference opener.
  • Steve Dunham threw five scoreless innings for the Pacers (3-1), but the bullpen collapsed.

  • Zac McCamie scattered seven hits over six innings, and Davy Gregg had three hits for South Carolina (2-0) in a 4-1 win over Longwood.
  • In Statesboro, Jeff Kindel and Jeremy Slayden each had three RBI as Georgia Tech beat Georgia Southern 10-6, spoiling the Eagles' season opener.
  • Georgia Tech, which had two four-run innings, evened its record at 1-1.

    Fishing

    Williamson gets win at Wal-Mart event

    Augusta area anglers, led by winner Keith Williamson of Lincolnton, Ga., dominated the Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League tournament at Strom Thurmond Lake on Saturday.

    Six of them finished in the top 10, including runner-up Steve DeBord of Martinez and third-place finisher Jason Buller of Thomson, Ga. The others were Mike Guilbeau of Evans (5th), Joey Zielinski of North Augusta (7th) and Jason Williamson of Aiken.

    Williamson weighed in five bass totaling 18 pounds, 12 ounces to edge DeBord for the top spot by two ounces as the tourney out of Wildwood Park attracted a field of 167 boats. Williamson won $4,480.

    Biggest bass weighed in was a 9-pound, 3-ounce fish, the only fish caught by Hans Cansler of Aiken. It netted him $830.

    Tennis

    Mirza is first from India to win title

    In Hyderabad, India, Sania Mirza became the first Indian to win a WTA Tour title with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 victory over Alyona Bondarenko of Ukraine in the final of the Hyderabad Open.

    Mirza, ranked 131st in the world, is a former Wimbledon junior doubles winner.

    "I had a great tournament," Mirza, 18, said. "The final could have gone either way."

  • In Paris, local favorite Amelie Mauresmo beat fourth-seeded Nadia Petrova of Russia 7-5, 6-3 on in the Open Gaz de France, setting up a final matchup with Russian Dinara Safina.
  • Safina rallied to defeat Tatiana Golovin of France 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (2) in 2 hours and 21 minutes.

    The second-seeded Mauresmo, a winner in Paris in 2001 and two-time runner-up, has 15 career titles but no Grand Slam championships. Mauresmo has reached only one Grand Slam final, losing to Martina Hingis at the 1999 Australian Open.

  • In Marseille, France, third-seeded Joachim Johansson of Sweden rallied for a 6-7 (1), 7-6 (6), 6-4 win over No. 6 seed Feliciano Lopez of Spain at the Open 13, setting up a final showdown with Ivan Ljubicic. Ljubicic beat Croatian countryman Mario Ancic 7-5, 2-6, 6-4. Johansson is going for his third ATP career title.

    Long shot captures Whirlaway Stakes

    In New York, Galloping Grocer's 3-year-old debut didn't go exactly as planned.

    Fading in the stretch, Galloping Grocer finished fourth and long shot Sort It Out ran off with the $75,000 Whirlaway Stakes at Aqueduct on a chilly day.

    Ridden by Timothy Thornton, Sort It Out held off Naughty New Yorker by a neck after a long drive to the finish, with Scrappy T third, another 1¼ lengths back.
