Wine 101

Planning a special Valentine's weekend with your loved one? Consider picking up a good bottle of wine. Wines are gaining popularity with twentysomethings, and overplanting of grapes in California has resulted in a drop in prices.

Don't know much about the vino? Here's a crash course in wine lingo.

Varietal wines: Wines named after the grapes from which they are made, such as chardonnay, cabernet sauvignon and merlot

Generic wines: Wines with less than 75 percent of their content coming from one grape varietal, often referred to as "table wine"

White: Style of light wine in shades of yellow to greenish or golden

Red: Style of wine made from black grapes and fermented with the skins; colors range from bright cherry to bluish-black

Blush wine: A pink wine from which the grape skins have been removed before fermentation is complete

Dry: Refers to the sugar content: the less sugar in a wine, the drier it is

Sparkling wine: Wines containing carbon dioxide bubbles

Vintage: The year the grapes were picked, often printed on the bottle

ATLANTA -- Only months after saying she wouldn't run for re-election, Georgia schools Superintendent Linda Schrenko has told Gov. Roy Barnes she may renege on her pledge.

In a letter to Mr. Barnes, Mrs. Schrenko voiced frustration over the General Assembly's unwillingness to support legislation that would make her office nonpartisan. In fact, the superintendent said she can't even get a legislator to file the bill.

Shortly after winning re-election in November, she told Morris News Service that this would be her last term.
