Five questions: Futurity competitor Scotty Rice

Scotty Rice, 28, of Weatherford, Texas, is in town for the 26th Annual Augusta Futurity.

1. What are you doing here at the Augusta Futurity?

"My family shows horses. My dad and my brother are trainers, and I show in the nonprofessional division (cutting horse competitions). I come help them, and I'm going to show two horses myself, one in the 5-6-year-old and one in the 4-year-old, and I qualified one for the Western Cup finals in the nonpro."

2. How do you raise a horse for a show like this?

"You just try to either raise them as colts through breeding them or you can go out and try and buy a horse that's bred well and put it through a program and get it trained. I use my family - my father and brother are trainers. They train them for me and that's how we do that."

3. What's your favorite part about raising horses?

"Well, I just like the thrill of competing. Competing on a high level, competing with all your friends. Everybody in this deal is friends and family, so that's a fun part of it."

4. Is this your full-time job?

"No, actually I work for a living as well. I have an electronics business."

5. What do you think of the song Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy?

(Laughing) "Well, I really don't have much comment on that song there."
