Officials closed down a portion of Furys Ferry Road for about an hour this afternoon after a construction crew hit a gas main.
The east- and westbound lanes of Furys Ferry from River Watch Parkway to Baston Road were closed after a construction vehicle struck the gas main while digging at about 1:05 p.m., said Gary Thigpen, a Martinez-Columbia Fire and Rescue battalion chief.
"This is just a precaution," he said.
Several employees of a Martinez business at the corner of Malboro Street and Furys Ferry were evacuated. Two houses nearby were under close watch by the fire department and had their gas tanks disconnected.
