Today in regional history:
JAN. 19, 1979
AIKEN -- A 2-year-old colt, purchased for slightly less than the record $890,445 earnings of his dam, Shuvee, has been brought to Aiken to be trained by the same man who guided Shuvee to fame.
The stunning chestnut colt is being trained by W.C. Freeman, under whose expertise Shuvee went on to win the title mare of the year for two consecutive years while earning more winnings than any previous mare.
Freeman said the colt brought the "astronomical price" mainly because of his excellent breeding.
