Guard's hot hand leading Armstrong Atlantic State



Reviewing and previewing local college basketball:

Audosha Kelley. The junior guard has led the Armstrong Atlantic State women in scoring in all but two games and leads the Peach Belt Conference in scoring, averaging 18.2 points per contests. Kelley poured in 17 in a four-point win over Augusta State last week.

UNC Pembroke. The men's and women's teams are a combined 0-6 in Peach Belt play and each will need a major turnaround to avoid remaining in the cellar - which probably will not happen. And this school, which fields mediocre basketball teams year after year, wants to begin a football program?

North Florida women at Augusta State, 2 p.m. Lady Ospreys winless in conference play at 0-3.

North Florida men at Augusta State, 4. Jaguars look to snap a two-game losing spell.

Kentucky State women at Paine, 5:30. Lady Lions try to stay undefeated in conference play.

Kentucky State men at Paine, 7:30. Lions seek to avenge earlier loss to Thorobreds.

USC Aiken women at Columbus State, 1. Battle of Peach Belt division leaders.

USC Aiken men at Columbus State, 3. Two of the league's three-worst defenses square off.

Georgia College & State women's coach John Carrick tossed four players off his team earlier this year, including first-team Peach Belt guard Latia Love for team violations. Their suspensions lasted one game, a loss at Lander. The players returned Wednesday, and the team defeated Kennesaw State at home.

1. Augusta State (8-6, 1-2 PBC). Jaguars 10th in Peach Belt free-throw shooting.

2. Paine (4-6, 3-3 SIAC). Daniel Lomax leading the way with a 13.6 point per game average.

3. USC Aiken (5-7, 1-1 PBC). Thanks to a spark from the bench, Pacers picked up their first win Wednesday under interim coach Steve Franklin.

1. USC Aiken (12-4, 2-0 PBC). Lady Pacers 3-3 on the road and face a stern test at Columbus State today.

2. Augusta State (8-2, 2-1 PBC). Senior guard Brandi Hollingsworth is just 5-for-38 shooting with 22 points and 17 turnovers the past four games.

3. Paine (5-5, 5-0 SIAC). Senior guard LeYenketa Blackmon second in SIAC in assist-turnover ratio (30 assists, 27 turnovers).

Lane men at Paine, 7:30 p.m., Monday. The Lions have won four of their past five, their lone slipup a two-point overtime loss Monday at Morehouse. Wins tonight and Monday will give Paine victories against quality opponents and will vault the team near the top of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference standings.
