College Basketball

University to honor area football teams

The Laney and Lincoln County football teams that advanced to the state semifinals will be honored during tonight's basketball doubleheader at Augusta State. The Lady Jaguars play host to Lander at 5:30, while the men's game follows at 7:30.

The Augusta State women (7-6, 1-1) face a Lady Bearcats squad (7-5, 2-0) that won the Peach Belt regular season a year ago and is riding a six-game winning streak. The Jaguars, who have identical records with the Bearcats at 8-5 (1-1 conference), are 5-0 at home.

Any fan wearing red will be admitted for $1.

Golf

Defending champs tied for 4-ball lead

Augusta's Jeff Knox and teammate Steve Johnson of Chattanooga, Tenn., are tied with two other teams after the first round of the 71st annual Southern International Four-Ball Championship on Tuesday in West Palm Beach, Fla.

Knox and Johnson, the tournament's defending champions, shot 7-under-par 65 to tie the teams of Danny Green and Trip Kuehne and Jack Hall and David Noll.

Play continues in the event through Friday.

Robinson becomes Syracuse head man

Texas co-defensive coordinator Greg Robinson was hired as coach at Syracuse on Tuesday, his first head coaching job in a 30-year career.

Robinson, 53, spent last season with the Longhorns, but was an NFL assistant for 14 years, including stints as defensive coordinator with the Kansas City Chiefs and Denver Broncos. Robinson, a Californian, also was an assistant with the New York Jets from 1990-1994.

Robinson succeeds Paul Pas¤qualoni, who was fired Dec. 29, after Syracuse lost to Georgia Tech 51-14 in the Champs Sports Bowl.

l A judge refused to dismiss a suit filed by former Washington coach Rick Neuheisel against the university and said he will rule Friday on a similar dismissal motion by the NCAA.

The lawsuit, which seeks unspecified damages for Neuheisel's dismissal in June 2003 after he was accused of dishonesty and violation of NCAA gambling rules, is scheduled to go to trial Jan. 24.

A motion by the university to dismiss the wrongful termination lawsuit was rejected Monday.

Boxing

King, Coates move on in Silver Gloves

North Augusta PAL's Nijee King was the lone South Carolina winner in the 2005 Regional Silver Gloves finals. He defeated Jesus Villareal of Florida in the 115-pound 10/11-year-old division.

Aiken Boxing Club's Jimmy Crawford finished second in his finals match against Florida's Samuel Valentin in the 75-pound 10/11 division. Aiken Boxing Club's Bobby Coates (147 pounds, 14/15) was an unopposed champion, along with females Amber Bush (90 pounds, 14/15) and Christian Domingue (125 pounds, 12/13) of the North Augusta PAL.

Midland Valley lists all-region athletes

Ten Midland Valley athletes were named to their Region 5-AAA teams.

The Mustangs include: Brent Durden (cross country); Rosa Jean (tennis); Mallory Stripling (volleyball); Kayla Baxley (volleyball); and football's Maurice Dukes, Terrence Sapp, Carlnel Williams, DeRico Davis, Eric Fulghum and Justin Cegelis.

Hall of Fame lists incoming '05 class

Major champions Jim Courier, Yannick Noah and Jana Novotna were elected Tuesday to the Inter¤national Tennis Hall of Fame, along with tour administrator Butch Buchholz. The four new members, raising the hall's total to 190, will be inducted July 9.Furnitureovertime
