Tsunami relief

Cricket players will hold fund-raiser

In Melbourne, Australia, the world's leading cricket players will participate in a charity fund-raiser in hopes of raising millions of dollars for relief work for the tsunami-earthquake disaster.

A crowd of about 80,000 fans is expected at the Melbourne Cricket Ground today, along with a television audience of millions across 122 countries.

Sri Lankan star Muttiah Muralitharan will lead the Asian team against a world team in a match organized by the International Cricket Council.

"It's very important, all these players getting around us and trying to help this cause," Muralitharan said. "It's difficult to think about playing. We're all devastated. But we can help ... by raising so much money that will be spent rebuilding where millions are homeless."

In other efforts in the sports world to help tsunami relief efforts:

 •  Tennis player Carlos Moya donated his $52,000 in prize money after winning his second consecutive Chennai Open title in Madras, India.

 •  A jersey autographed by players of the English soccer club Manchester United fetched nearly $37,000 at a charity auction in Hong Kong.

 •  A Skate-Aid ice show will be held Feb. 4 in Plymouth, Mich. The event is organized by U.S. ice dance champions Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto and also will feature Johnny Weir and Timothy Goebel.

Senior Bowl roster includes Greene

In Mobile, Ala., Auburn's Jason Campbell, Georgia's David Greene and Arizona State's Andrew Walter will share quarterback duties for the South team in this month's Senior Bowl.

The North quarterbacks are three top NFL prospects: Akron's Charlie Frye, Connecticut's Dan Orlovsky and Purdue's Kyle Orton.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Jon Gruden will coach the South in the Jan. 29 game at Ladd-Peebles Stadium. Norv Turner of the Oakland Raiders will coach the North.

Campbell, the Southeastern Conference's Offensive Player of the Year, led undefeated Auburn to an SEC championship and a No. 2 ranking. His 31 career victories are the most for an Auburn quarterback.

Greene's 42 wins are the most of any quarterback in NCAA Division I-A history. He broke the mark of 39 held by Tennessee's Peyton Manning.

NCAA

Council gives initial nod to a 12th game

In Grapevine, Texas, while most of the proposals from basketball coaches seeking more access to players and prospects will get further consideration from the NCAA, they are a long way from gaining final approval.

The 44 proposals from the National Association of Basketball Coaches and the Womens Basketball Coaches Association were among 146 for various sports considered Sunday by the NCAA Division I Management Council.

The council gave initial approval to making permanent a 12th football game each season for Division I and I-AA teams, something that couldn't take effect before the 2006 season.

There was little discussion of that issue.

Schools are now allowed 12th games only in seasons when there are 14 Saturdays between Labor Day weekend and the last weekend in November. The 2003 season qualified for additional games, but the next won't come until 2008.
