Today in regional history:
Jan. 8, 1947
South Carolina statesman James F. Byrnes resigned yesterday as secretary of state, and President Truman has chosen Gen. George C. Marshall to replace him.
Byrnes, 67, declared doctors had warned him he must slow down in the job as secretary of state.
Congressional leaders were swift to heap praise on both men.
It had been known that Byrnes had grown tired some months ago, but he looked to be in very good health lately.
Preventing fire
- When buying new heating equipment, make sure it has an independent testing laboratory label.
- Install and maintain heating equipment correctly, and be sure that it complies with local fire and building codes.
- All types of portable heaters must be kept at least 36 inches from anything that can burn, including furniture, bedding, clothing, pets and people.
- Do not operate space heaters when you are not in the room or when you go to sleep.
- Children and pets should be supervised at all times when space heaters are in use.
- Check electric space heaters each season for fraying or splitting wires or overheating.
- If you have a liquid-fueled space heater, use only the fuel recommended by the manufacturer. Never use gasoline or any other substitute fuel; the wrong fuel could burn hotter than the equipment's design limits and cause a serious fire.
- When refueling a liquid-fueled space heater , always turn off the heater and let it cool completely before adding fuel. Wipe up any spills promptly.
- Have your fireplace chimney inspected by a professional before the start of every heating season and cleaned if necessary.
- Use a sturdy fireplace screen.
- Burn only wood in a fireplace; never burn paper or pine boughs.
- If you decorate your fireplace with Christmas stockings or other seasonal decorations, don't burn fires in it.
- Burn only wood in a wood stove, and be sure that the wood stove is placed on an approved stove board to protect the floor from heat and hot coals.
