Lawyer granted federal post

Lisa Godbey Wood was formally sworn in as the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Georgia on Dec. 16.

Ms. Wood has served as interim U.S. attorney since July 31. She is a 1990 summa cum laude graduate of the University of Georgia School of Law. Ms. Wood clerked for U.S. District Court Judge Anthony A. Alaimo and then joined the Brunswick law firm of Gilbert, Harrell, Sumerford and Martin, where she became a partner in 1995.

According to a news release announcing Ms. Wood's appointment, she is one of 93 U.S. attorneys who are responsible for prosecuting federal crimes and defending civil cases brought against the United States.

Man is charged in attack on wife

A 28-year-old Hephzibah man was arrested late Tuesday after police said he broke a window in a truck his wife was driving, reached in and smashed her head into the steering wheel, and hung up a cell phone as she was trying to dial 911, a Richmond County Sheriff's Office report says.

Michael Shane Kirk, of the 3800 block of New Karleen Road, was charged with criminal trespass, obstructing a 911 call and simple battery. Christina Roxanne Kirk's forehead was bruised during the incident, according to the report.

Teen says three men attacked him by road

A 17-year-old Augusta man told police three men beat him up Tuesday in the 2500 block of Milledgeville Road after asking him for a cigarette, a Richmond County Sheriff's Office report says.

After the men asked the victim for a cigarette, they surrounded him and punched him, throwing him to the ground, the report says. The teen was able to get away. He ran home and called 911, the report said.

2 arrested in burglary of Hephzibah home

Richmond County sheriff's deputies arrested two men Wednesday who they said burglarized a Hephzibah home in November.

Authorities charged Michael Aubrey Herrin, 18, of the 1300 block of Harris Road in Evans, and Spenser Robert Hartley, 17, of the 1900 block of Piedmont Street in Augusta, with felony burglary.

Police said the pair stole a television, a digital camcorder and a ring from a residence in the 2500 block of Cross Creek Road between 4:30 p.m. Nov. 24 and 8:45 a.m. Nov. 25.

Man says he was shot in shoulder at home

An Augusta man told Richmond County sheriff's deputies he was shot in the shoulder during an argument at his home Wednesday.

According to an incident report, Titus Quaye, 47, of the 1800 block of Welsh Lane, told deputies he was arguing with a woman at about 4 a.m. when he heard a loud bang.

When he awoke the next day, he noticed his shoulder bleeding and went to Medical College of Georgia Hospital.

Porn, lottery tickets stolen from store

An employee at the Citgo at 1857 Gordon Highway told police Tuesday that someone broke into the store and stole $186 worth of pornographic magazines and lottery tickets, a Richmond County Sheriff's Office report says.

Two windows of the store were broken out with a cinder block and several items were scattered on the floor when police arrived, the report says.

Bomb squad is called to examine grenade

The Richmond County Sheriff's Office bomb squad was called to the North Augusta Department of Public Safety headquarters Tuesday after a North Augusta man brought in a hand grenade he found in a box he bought in an estate sale, a North Augusta Department of Public Safety report says.

The report says the man brought the grenade to turn it in. The bomb squad determined it was a German grenade from World War II.

The grenade will be taken to Richmond County's training facility, where the bomb squad will check to see whether it is live, the report said.

Augustan is charged with simple battery

A 49-year-old Augusta man was arrested late Tuesday and charged with hitting a woman in the head with what she said was a pistol, a Richmond County Sheriff's Office report says.

Ervin Keith Ellison, 51, of the 1200 block of Clark Road, Hephzibah, is charged with simple battery, according to the report by Deputy Phillip Barnett. A 40-year-old Hephzibah woman told police Mr. Brown attacked her in her driveway, hitting her on the head with a black pistol and threatening to kill her. A witness said he was also threatened by Mr. Ellison, Deputy Barnett reported.

A black pistol similar to the one the victim said she was hit with was found on the scene.

Salvation Army still is accepting donations

The Salvation Army will be open until 5 p.m. Friday to accept last-minute donations. Vehicles for the next auto auction can be turned in at the social service center, 1384 Greene St.

Donors can get tax credit even if the vehicle is delivered later if the paperwork is done by 5 p.m. Contributions of clothing, furniture, small appliances and other household items can be left at the center or any of The Salvation Army's Augusta-area thrift stores.

The stores are at 2818 Peach Orchard Road and 1507 North Leg Road in Augusta; 1803 Knox Ave. in North Augusta; and 910 Augusta Highway SE in Thomson, Ga.

Event will celebrate Lincoln's demand

In observance of the 143rd anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, The Augusta Lincoln League will hold a ceremony Saturday.

The event will be held at 11 a.m. at Tabernacle Baptist Church, 1223 Laney Walker Blvd. The keynote speaker is the Rev. Dr. Dwayne Walker, pastor of Phillips Temple Christian Methodist Church, Indianapolis.

In the historic document, Lincoln declared freedom for slaves in Confederate states that continued to rebel against the Union. The proclamation didn't actually free slaves, but it paved the way for the 13th Amendment two years later in December 1865, when slavery ended in all parts of the nation.

Woman reports man made sexual advances

An Augusta woman told Richmond County sheriff's deputies a deliveryman touched her inappropriately and made sexual advances towards her Dec. 23.

The 43-year-old woman said the man was delivering bunk beds to her residence in the 1000 block of River Ridge Road at about 4:30 p.m. when he took her hand and placed it on his groin, according to an incident report.
