Mr. Joel Bruce Burris (AIKEN, S.C.)



AIKEN, S.C. - On Friday, December 24, 2004, Mr. Joel Bruce Burris (221 Cherry Hills Drive, Aiken) entered into eternal rest at the age of 96. He will be remembered by all who met him as a generous and loving father, a dependable, Christian Friend and a loyal and faithful family member. He was a gentleman in the truest sense. Mr. Burris was a dedicated member and Steward of Cumberland A.M.E. Church of Aiken and the Masonic Lodge. Mr. J. Bruce Burris lived, worked and raised his family in Washington, D.C., and returned to his home in Aiken during his retirement. He completed a tour in the Navy and was the first African-American to work in a non-custodial capacity in the United States Capital building. Mr. Burris is survived by one son, Girard F. Burris; one daughter-in-law, Monique N. Burris; tow grand-daughters, Mercedes M. Burris and Ashley N. Burris; two sisters, Ms. Naiomi Burris (East Orange, N.J.) and Ms. Inez Johnson (Philadelphia, Penn.); and a ve ry special friend, Ms. Lillie Ford. The home-going services will be held on Thursday, December 30, 2004, 1 p.m. at Cumberland A.M.E. Church, 111 Kershaw Street, Aiken. Pallbearers and floral bearers will be his great nephews and great nieces. A wake will be held at Jackson-Brooks Funeral Home on Wednesday evening, December 29,, 7 to 8 p.m. Interment will take place at Sunset Memory Gardens.
