PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers used tenacious defense to force 24 turnovers and scored 11 of the final 13 points from the foul line to defeat Clemson 66-51 on Saturday.
The No. 22 Scarlet Knights (6-2) made 16-of-22 free throws in the second half and 18-of-27 in the game.
Chelsea Newton led Rutgers with 17 points, including 9-of-10 from the line. Nikki Jett added 15 and Michelle Campbell had 13.
Rutgers took the lead when Jett broke a 9-9 tie with a jumper from the baseline and built a 12-point lead with 3:17 left before Clemson cut it to 27-21 at the break.
Clemson (5-5) pulled to 43-38 with 9:30 left, but the Scarlet Knights regained a double-digit lead with just over two minutes to play.
Reggie Maddox scored a career-high 18 points, all in the second half, for Clemson. Maddox finished 6-for-12 overall and 4-of-6 from 3-point range.
Julie Talley, the Lady Tigers' second leading scorer, was held scoreless.
