Today in regional history:
DEC. 17, 1982
Salaried employees of the city of Augusta are in for an especially tight post-Christmas pinch this year. They'll work two weeks, Dec. 20-31, for only one week's pay and won't get paid again for an unusually long stretch of three weeks.
The reason behind the pay change is to make up for last January, when in effect they were paid for an extra week.
"We do not work by the day, we work by the year," said Miriam Ashmore, the director of personnel.
