SCE&G customers to pay more for power

COLUMBIA - Customers of South Carolina Electric and Gas will see higher electricity rates starting next month.

The Public Service Commission on Wednesday approved an overall 2.89 percent increase in the base rates. Residential customers will see a higher increase at 4.44 percent. That means residential customers using 1,000 kilowatt hours a month would see their bills rise $3.93.

Business customers will see increases based on their size: 1.01 percent for large operations, 2.53 percent for medium-size and 1.67 percent for small commercial customers.

The utility initially sought a 5.66 percent rate increase in July.

Father is arrested in death of 8-month-old

SPARTANBURG - An Inman man has been arrested in the death of his 8-month-old daughter, Spartanburg County sheriff's deputies said.

Harold Ellis Douglas, 21, was arrested Tuesday and charged with homicide by child abuse Wednesday, Lt. Ron Gahagan said.

Courtney Robinson died Tuesday evening at Greenville Memorial Hospital after being transferred from Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Douglas told investigators he was bathing the girl Monday afternoon when she stopped breathing.

An investigator's report says an autopsy found blood around the girl's brain and bruising on both sides of her head.

Woman dies from the cold while in house

GREENVILLE - A Greenville woman has been found dead in her home, and authorities say she died of exposure to the cold.

Elizabeth H. Verdin, 89, was found Monday night after a friend asked police to check on her.

An autopsy determined that she died Saturday of hypothermia, Greenville County Deputy Coroner Karie Cain said.

A police report said the power had been turned off at the home since Dec. 6.

Betty Edwards had called Monday night and didn't get an answer. Her husband, Robert Edwards, went to the home, found no lights on and called police.

Second teen charged in student's shooting

SPARTANBURG - A second teen has been arrested and charged with murder in the shooting death of a Spartanburg Methodist College student.

Joshua Jeter, 17, of Spartanburg, was arrested Tuesday, Capt. Randy Hardy said.

Lance Levell Lyles, 16, was charged with murder Friday in the death of Tavaris Quarlnako Howze, 21, of Chester.

Mr. Howze, a freshman, was killed Dec. 8 in the apartment complex near the school where he lived.
