Softball

Klein selected for AAA All-State team

Harlem catcher Amber Klein was named to the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association Class AAA All-State softball team by state fastpitch coaches Tuesday.

Klein hit.370 with four home runs this season for the Bulldogs. She had been nominated to the All State team since her freshman season.

Other area softball players selected were: In Class AAA, catcher Ashley Collins, Hephzibah (second team); outfielder Re'Nate Lopez, Hephzibah (second team); outfielder Suzanne Borja, Cross Creek (honorable mention); catcher Stepahnie Legg, Cross Creek (honorable mention); and catcher Sarah McPherson, Washington County (honorable mention).

In Class A, catcher Jill Mc­Kinney of Lincoln County made the second team.

College Basketball

Lady Jags remain in Division II Top 25

When Augusta State plays at Georgia on Friday, the Lady Jaguars will carry a national ranking to Athens, Ga.

Augusta State (6-2) checked in at No. 24 in the latest USA Today/ESPN/WBCA Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll released Tuesday. The Lady Jaguars dropped from 17th, receiving 96 points.

Drury topped the poll with 21 first-place votes and 617 points and was followed by Merrimack, Emporia State, Washburn and Seattle Pacific. California (PA) fell from first to sixth, but still received two first-place votes, after losing to USC Aiken.

The Lady Pacers (9-3), who lost at Division I Furman on Sunday, received consideration, garnering nine votes.

Youth Soccer

Patriots play host to showcase event

The Columbia County Patriots inaugural Showcase Tournament has been scheduled for Dec. 10-12 at Patriots Park.

Teams from Georgia, Tennes­see, New York, Indiana and Ohio will be competing in U-15 though U-19 age divisions.

Lady Jaguars ink Swedish linkster

Augusta State coach Trelle McCombs announced that Anna Lindeborg of Stockholm, Sweden has signed a national letter-of-intent to play for the Jaguars beginning in fall 2005.

Lindeborg is the first early signee for Augusta State.

Augusta State won its first tournament in school history at the Taco Bell Intercollegiate in October.

College Baseball

Augusta State signs pair of standouts

Jaguars head coach Skip Fite announced the signing of two top high school prospects.

Third baseman Chris Waites of Alpharetta, Ga., and Kevin Boyd, a catcher from Rockdale County High School.

Waites hit.427 with nine homers during the past season for Providence Christian High School and was a two-time All-Gwinnett County selection. Boyd hit.465 as a junior and was a two-time all-county selection.

Police league will hold Silver Gloves

The North Augusta Police Athletic League will play host to the Silver Gloves Boxing Championships on Saturday at 7 p.m. in Clearwater, S.C.

Tennis

King steps aside as U.S. Fed Cup coach

In White Plains, N.Y., Zina Garrison was given a one-year contract to stay on as U.S. Fed Cup captain, while Billie Jean King retired as a coach for the team.

Garrison, the 1990 Wimbledon runner-up, was hired as captain a year ago. The United States went 1-1 in her debut season, losing at Austria in the quarterfinals.
