Parel shoots way out of contention

In La Quinta, Calif., Augusta's Scott Parel fell into a tie for 132nd after carding 7-over-par 79 in the fifth round of the six-round PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament.

Parel was forced to battle through a drizzle and temperatures in the upper 40s on the Nicklaus Tournament Course at PGA West,

The top 30 and ties receive 2005 PGA Tour cards. The next 50 will get Nationwide Tour cards, and the remaining players will receive conditional Nationwide Tour status.

Brian Davis shot 4-under 68 and moved out to a six-shot lead at 19-under 341, with one round remaining.

Greg Owen (72), Rob Rashell (74), David Hearn (67) and John Elliott (68) were tied for second at 347.

Bill Haas, son of PGA Tour player Jay Haas is tied for 44th at 4-under, and 1987 U.S. Open winner Scott Simpson is tied for 106th at 4-over.

l In Daytona Beach, Fla., six months from high school graduation, Paula Creamer earned her LPGA Tour card on Sunday by closing with 2-under-par 70 for a five-shot victory in the qualifying tournament.

Among the 30 women who earned their cards was another 18-year-old, Brittany Lincicome, who held the first-round lead at the U.S. Women's Open this year. She closed with 68.

Arbitrator will rule on players' hearing

In New York, the NBA informed the players' union it will not seek a temporary restraining order in federal court, clearing the way for a grievance hearing over suspensions for the Pacers-Pistons brawl.

Arbitrator Roger Kaplan will preside over the hearing Thursday and Friday at a Manhattan law office. Suspended players Ron Artest, Jermaine O'Neal and Stephen Jackson are expected to attend. The NBA has already filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court challenging Kaplan's authority to hear the grievance, and the league was expected to try to prevent the hearing from going forward.

Lynx stumble on road vs. Grrrowl

In Greenville, S.C., the Augusta Lynx took a one-goal lead into the final 25 minutes of Sunday's game against the Greenville Grrrowl, but didn't score again and took a 3-1 loss.

Jim Shepherd's fourth goal of the season gave Augusta (7-10-2) a 1-0 lead seven minutes into the second period, but Greenville tied the game before the second intermission and scored twice in the third period to win.

Jamie Johnson and Brian Passmore had the assists for Augusta, while goaltender Matus Kostur had 25 saves for Augusta, which plays next at home Tuesday against Louisiana.

Augusta club scores seven wins in ring

Augusta's Fred Hall defeated Ronald Wright of the Columbus Blazers in the Open Division of the Georgia Silver Gloves Boxoff. Roman Pulley, Deondre Walker, A.J. Obleton. Diavante Jones and Matt Williams, all of Augusta, also won their bouts in the Junior Olympic Division.

Tyrone Guy, of Augusta, won a second-round knock out of Albany's Gary Tyson boxing in the Novice Division.

Fitzgerald dies in motorcycle crash

In Tampa, Fla., Tom Fitzgerald, the coach of NCAA champions in Division I and II who also coached the Columbus Crew of MLS, died after a motorcycle accident while on his way to scout players at a tournament. He was 53.

Fitzgerald returned to the University of Tampa after coaching the Spartans from 1987-96, leading them to the Division II championship in 1994.

In 2002, he led UCLA to the NCAA national title, becoming just the third person to win a championship in the top two divisions.
