Ruth's bat is sold for $1.26 million
In New York, the massive 46-ounce Louisville Slugger bat used by Babe Ruth to drill the first home run in Yankee Stadium history was sold for a record $1.26 million Thursday to an unidentified private collector.
The bat, 36 inches of solid ash billed as "The Holy Grail of sports memorabilia," sold after about one minute of high-stakes bidding at Sotheby's auction house, fetching a Ruthian price above its presale estimate of $1 million, said Sotheby's spokeswoman Lauren Gioia.

Parel drifts back into Q-School pack
In La Quinta, Calif., Augusta's Scott Parel fell back in the second round of the final stage of the PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament.
Parel, who opened with 2-under-par 70 and was tied for 28th place, dropped into a tie for 127th place after 77 on Thursday.
The top 30 finishers in the 170-player field earn PGA Tour cards after the six-round tournament.
On Thursday, Parel shot 4-over-par 40 on the front nine, making just two pars. He had four bogeys, a double bogey and two birdies. Parel shot 37 on the back nine.
Creamer, a high school senior, shot 4-under-par 68 on Thursday in the second round of the five-round LPGA Tour Qualifying School Tournament.
Creamer, who opened with 70, is tied for second place at 138, one shot behind Young Jo (71-66).
The top 30 finishers of the 137 in the field will earn their cards.
First-round leader Naree Song followed her opening 67 with 76 and is now tied for 20th place.

Jaguars can't rally from a slow start
In Carrollton, Ga., unbeaten West Georgia limited Augusta State to 25 percent shooting from the field in the first half and went on to take a 83-52 victory.
Augusta State (3-2) hit just eight of 31 field goal attempts in the first 20 minutes. West Georgia (6-0) was 14-for-25 and led 37-20.
Roberto Aufiero was the lone bright spot from the field for the Jaguars. The forward hit six of seven shots and led the team with 12 points.
The other four Augusta starters combined to shoot 10-for-34 from the field.

Fratello is named coach of Grizzlies
Mike Fratello was hired as coach of the Memphis Grizzlies on Thursday, leaving the TV booth and replacing friend and mentor Hubie Brown, who retired last week for health reasons.
Fratello coached the Atlanta Hawks for eight seasons and the Cleveland Cavaliers for six before going into sports broadcasting. He is the Grizzlies' seventh head coach.

Five area players are in all-star game
Five area players will suit up for Saturday's Georgia-South Carolina Independent Schools Association All-Star game at Mount de Sales in Macon.
Augusta Christian's Toby Brown and William Lyon will join Wardlaw's Jake Bryan for South Carolina. Shaun Pinnell of John Hancock and Jared Jackson of Brentwood go for Georgia.
