In 27 years of playing golf, Augusta's Joe Cook had made two eagles on par-4 holes.
Two weeks ago today, in a magical five-hole stretch at Forest Hills Golf Club, Cook matched that total.
Playing in the Forest Hills Senior Men's Golf Association, Cook eagled the 14th hole with a 155-yard 6-iron shot. Four holes later, he eagled the 18th hole from the right rough, knocking in a 105-yard pitching wedge shot.
"I'm sure it's happened before, but I've never heard of it," said Cook, 73.
Forest Hills head pro Robby Watson and assistant pro Scott Allen said it's the first time they've heard of it being done at the course.
After the first eagle, Cook was so excited he lost his focus on holes Nos. 15, 16 and 17.
"I don't know what I did on those holes," he said.
He regained his composure by No. 18, though he had no idea his second shot went into the hole for a eagle. Playing partner Ralph Veal did. Veal, who was by the green, watched Cook's shot go over the right fairway trap, hit on the front of the green and roll into the hole.
"He said, 'I think that ball's going in,' " Cook said. "I said 'no way.' My thought was he was pulling my leg. I watched him, the way he was looking at the shot. He backed up and with his eyes, he followed it around. I thought he was kidding me. I couldn't believe it."
"It was fantastic," Veal said of seeing Cook make two eagles on par-4s.
"It's a feat you don't often see. When I told him the ball went in on No. 18, he came running up there."
Veal was also the only witness in the foursome to see Cook's eagle on No. 14.
"After I did it, people were kidding me, asking if I had a witness," Cook said. "I said, 'yeah, a guy was standing right next to both of them.' "
