The regular monthly meeting of tonight's Augusta City Council will apparently avoid a planned protest.
Residents of Cumming Street near the river had said they would complain about plans for a proposed levee. However, those interested have decided to meet during the week to formally prepare the protest, and it will be ready at the January meeting of the council.

PEACH CARE
Don't squeeze peaches - they bruise easily. Place firm peaches on the counter for one to two days until they ripen. Refrigerate ripe peaches and use within a week.

KNOW HOW
To remove stains or marks from wood, determine the base substance (water, alcohol, oil) of the stain. Always test any cleaning chemicals in an inconspicuous area first.
Ink marks, such as ballpoint pens, can be removed with hair spray (followed by a water rinse) or nonflammable dry-cleaning fluid (followed by a rinse of denatured alcohol).
Determine the finish of wood with a dab of linseed oil. If oil soaks in, the wood has an oil finish. If it beads up, the wood has a hard finish. Hard finishes can tolerate harsher chemicals. Avoid chemicals such as lacquer thinner.
If the stain has penetrated the finish, sand the area with medium, then fine sandpaper. Vacuum up the dust. You might need to bleach the stain with oxalic acid. (Follow directions on label.) Next, experiment with stains to bring the wood back to its original color. Apply a new finish.
