Fund-raiser will benefit expansion of Hope House

Hope House has spent years ensuring the Milledgeville and Wrightsboro Road locations meet the needs of the women living there.

Now the organization is trying to better meet the needs of the children staying at the houses.

The organization, a long-term residential substance-abuse program for women and children, will hold its second annual fund-raiser from 7 to 11 p.m. Nov. 12, at the Marbury Center, 1257 Broad St.

Money raised will be used to add additional facility space for the therapeutic child-care program, said Dr. Gerald Carrier, the executive director.

Last year's event raised around $11,800, he said, and this year's goal is $20,000.

"Not only do we treat the disease of alcohol and drugs of the mother, but the consequences it's had on the children and space is limited," Dr. Carrier said. "We get children from ages 0 to 13 and they all live in one facility. But when they're doing group activities, they're all in one small room."

Upon arrival at Hope House, which now houses 12 children and 15 women, Dr. Carrier said children are given a complete psychological assessment. The assessment helps administrators with the child's treatment program.

"Children of alcoholics and addicts are at very high risk for being future substance abusers because there's a genetic component to it," he said. "It's critical to start with them so you can inform them and let them become aware of the disease process so they can make better choices when they become adults."

The fund-raiser also will feature live entertainment by the Athens band Still Cruzin', plus silent and live auctions for such items as a new golf cart, vacations, dinners, antique furniture, jewelry and original art.

Tickets are $25 per person and $40 for couples and are tax deductible. Tickets are available at the Surrey Center Pharmacy, 483 Highland Ave.
