Palazzo's Restaurant, which is opening this week on Furys Ferry Road for breakfast and lunch, is very much in Augusta. But the bistro, with its cappuccino and pastry area, a wall mural of Paris and a full afternoon tea menu, is distinctly European. That's how owners Kim and Michael Bohne, who once presided over the Magnolia Tea Room and Bohne's English Pub, want it.
For breakfast, Palazzo's will offer New Orleans French toast with a praline glaze and fruit salad for $6.95, "La Tea Da" ( two scones with Devonshire cream and jam with a pot of tea or a cup of java) for $4.95, and "Gay Paree" (a croissant stuffed with scrambled eggs, ham and cheese, served with grits or fruit salad) for $5.95.
Salads, sandwiches and wraps are available for lunch, which begins at 11 a.m.
The lunch menu features a "purely English ham sandwich" (a sliced honey-baked ham with provolone cheese and cherry chutney on a warm onion roll, $6.95), and Charleston citrus-grilled shrimp ( spring salad mix with mandarin oranges, cucumber and feta cheese topped with citrus-grilled shrimp, served with a house vinaigrette, $8.95).
Mrs. Bohne said they'll open for dinner in December, and the menu will be "chalk board" service. Steak and prime rib will always be available.
She hopes the biggest draw will be the tearoom. For $14.95, diners can choose from a selection of black, brown, green, white, jasmine or herbal teas and enjoy it with assorted open-faced sandwiches, scones, lemon curd, jams and Devonshire cream and cookies, pastries and cakes.
Mrs. Bohne is hoping the Chai tea will attract serious tea drinkers.
"You can get all the specialty coffees you want around here, but you won't be able to get these selections unless you're at the Ritz Carlton in New York or in London," she said.
Palazzo's Restaurant is at 231 Furys Ferry Road, Suite 101, just off Parrish Road. Hours are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. Tearoom hours are 2-5 p.m. Reach them at (706) 855-2025.
