Manhunt results from traffic stop

WAGENER - A traffic stop evolved into a protracted manhunt after two men ran from the car and exchanged gunshots with police, authorities said.

At about midnight, about 40 officers from local, state and federal agencies had surrounded a mobile home on Cofer Street where the two men were thought to be holed up, said Lt. Michael Frank of the Aiken County Sheriff's Office.

A negotiator had been called in to try to talk to the men, an officer at the scene said.

The manhunt began at about 8:30 p.m. on Hazel Hudson Drive when a Wagener police officer pulled over a vehicle occupied by two men.

The passenger jumped from the car and ran, followed by the driver. One of the men was heard saying he wasn't going back to jail.

Lt. Frank said the officers thought they saw a weapon and fired at the men, who shot back.

A helicopter and bloodhound teams were also called in to assist in the search.
