Pickup wreck kills man, 20

A 20-year-old Graniteville man died early Saturday morning after his 1998 Chevrolet pickup flipped and crashed on Bettis Academy Road, authorities said.

John Thomas Youngblood III, of the 100 block of Jasmine Drive, was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:16 a.m., Aiken County Chief Deputy Coroner Tim Carlton said.

Mr. Youngblood was traveling toward Graniteville on Bettis Academy Road when his truck went off the right side of the street, Mr. Carlton said. He overcompensated, drove toward the center of the road and then sped back off the right side.

Mr. Carlton said Mr. Youngblood hit an embankment and flipped the vehicle. He was partially ejected from the truck and died of trauma, the coroner said. Mr. Youngblood wasn't wearing his seat belt and was alone in the truck.

Power outage affects 911 dispatch center

An electrical power outage temporarily affected operations at the Richmond County Sheriff's Office 911 center Saturday morning.

From about 7 until 8:38 a.m., about 2,000 Georgia Power customers were without power, said Lt. Sharon Bennett, the 911 supervisor.

Lt. Bennett credited 911 Director Phil Wasson for making an emergency trip to the center, climbing over a barbed-wire fence and opening a gate that became inoperable because of the outage.

She said Georgia Power personnel blamed the outage on a vehicle hitting a power line.
