Coble takes control after shooting 72
In Albany, Ga., Augusta's Laura Coble had the day's low round and moved into position for her second consecutive Georgia Women's Golf Association Amateur Championship title.
Coble, who trailed by three shots after a first-round 78, leads by four after 72 on Wednesday. First-round leader Ellen Dempsey went from 75 to 79 and is in second place.
Fellow Augustan Elaine Montano is in fifth place, nine shots back, after shooting 80-79.
The final round is today.
Sappington, of Alpharetta, has shot 72-72-144 at Country Club of Columbus. Former Augustan Frank Perry, of Fayetteville, is the top golfer with area ties. He's tied for 10th place (81-74-155), 11 shots off the lead.
The NCAA Division II Pacers, 2-0 this season, won the 24-team event by 14 shots over Coker College. USC Aiken finished the 36-hole event at 18-over.
The Pacers' Dane Burkhart led the way with 2-over-par 146, finishing second individually, four shots behind Josh Coley of Lee University.
USC Aiken's Scott Brown finished third at 147, James Browning was 12th at 152 and Casey Thompson and Tyler Rolley tied for 19th place at 153.
Freshman Lauren May shot 77-80 to finish tied for 20th at 13-over-par. Freshmen Kristen Bragg (79-79) tied for 23rd place and Garrett Phillips (84-80) tied for 48th place to round out the top three Lady Jaguars.
Augusta State returns to action Oct. 11 in the Lady Pirate Fall Intercollegiate in Greenville, N.C.
lFormer Augusta State University golfer James Heath is one of 29 finalists for the Great Britain & Ireland Walker Cup squad. The team will have 10 players.
The Walker Cup matches will be held Aug. 13-14, 2005, at Chicago Golf Club in Wheaton, Ill.
Whitfield to fight on Jones Jr. undercard
Hephzibah's Rayonta Whitfield will be in action Saturday in an undercard bout for the Roy Jones Jr. vs. Glen Johnson light heavyweight fight in Memphis, Tenn.
Whitfield (1-0 as a pro) will take on Lamont Lindsey at the Fedex Forum.
Whitfield made his pro debut June 19, earning a unanimous decision over Chris Burford in 123-pound featherweight bout in Tunica, Miss.
USC Aiken women, men roll to wins
In Americus, Ga., the USC Aiken women routed Georgia Southwestern 12-0 for their first victory of the season behind a record-setting performance by Jodi Kulinitch.
Kulinitch set a school record and tied a Peach Belt Conference record with five goals. Audie Beckman added three goals and Jen Mascarin had two.
Also in Americus, Emmanuel Maduka and Mamadou Ndoye each had two goals, and Eugene Eshun-Phillips had three assists in the USC Aiken men's 7-1 victory over Georgia Southwestern on Tuesday.
It was the biggest offensive ouput in nearly two years for the Pacers, 4-2-1.
