Dr. Lyle Ross Smith (EVANS, Ga.)

EVANS, Ga.- Dr. Lyle Ross Smith, 61, of Evans, Georgia, entered into rest Tuesday, September 21, 2004, at his home, surrounded by his family. Lyle Smith was born in Paonia, Colorado. He attended undergraduate school at California State Polytechnic University, where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and his State of California teaching credential. He taught school mathematics for two years before returning to school for graduate work. He earned his Master of Science degree in Mathematics and his Doctorate degree in Mathematics Education at Texas A&M University. He was hired to teach mathematics education courses at Augusta College in 1973. He taught there for 31 years. He was awarded the Georgia Board of Regents Distinguished Professor of Teaching and Training in 1997. He served as acting department chair for several years. During his tenure at Augusta State University, he published over sixty articles and gave more than 50 presentations at regional and national mathematics and research conferences. He was awarded the Louis K. Bell research award in 1988 and again in 2001. He was the director of over 100 theses for Masters and Education Specialist students. He was also selected by the student body to give the commencement address in 1979. He loved teaching and fought to keep teaching as long as possible during his long battle with his illness. Lyle loved baseball and loved to watch his sons and grandsons play. He was the cofounder of the West Augusta Little league, serving as vice-president for several years. He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Kathy; one daughter, Kelly Day, her husband, Paul, of Evans; their children, Meredith, Megan, Brennan and Erin; two sons, Bradley Smith and Brian Smith and Brian's wife, Valarie, of Athens, Georgia and their children, Parker, Zachary and Pate. He is also survived by his brother, Fred R. Smith of Tyrone, Georgia; his sister, Lorie Gookin of Portland, Or egon and his mother, Florence S. Smith of Tyrone, Georgia. His father, Fred Ross Smith, predeceased him. Funeral services will be Saturday, September 25, 2004 at 1 p.m. in the Chapel of Thomas Poteet & Son. Pallbearers will be Brian Smith, Bradley Smith, Fred Smith, Paul Day, Dr. Ron Weber and Dr. Frank Chou. Interment will follow in Westover Memorial Park. The family suggests that memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 1725, 325 8th St., Augusta, Ga. 30903.
