Doctors Hospital chooses new CEO

The new CEO at Doctors Hospital will have a short journey to his new office.

"I'm right next door," said Chief Operating Officer C. Shayne George.

Mr. George, 36, was named by the HCA hospital to the top spot Wednesday, replacing Terry Gunn, who is going to another HCA property, Trident Health System in Charleston.

Mr. George came to Doctors as the chief operating officer in December 1999.

"I've been here in the market for about five years now and know the market pretty well," he said. "It was a great opportunity."

His immediate plans will focus on growth.

"There are some internal plans right now on some renovations within the hospital to give us some more room, particularly in pharmacy and our burn center," Mr. George said. "We're working on some satellite spots around the area, too, (to provide) more access points."

Mr. George has been in the HCA system for 13 years, starting at Lanier Park Regional Hospital in Gainesville, Ga. His wife, Jan, and his two sons are excited about moving up without having to move on, he said.

"My family is just ecstatic about it, the possibility to stay on and plus, in this role," Mr. George said. "We really enjoy the community. A good bunch of folks. Great place to raise a family in Augusta."
