Swat team enters residence

Police officers from several agencies have surrounded a residence in a rural section of McDuffie County just north of Dearing Elementary School this evening, after a man fired shots at a deputy responding to an emergency call at his girlfriend's house, authorities said.

A command post had been set up near a house in the 2400 block of Old Whiteoak Road, where a man police identified as David Kitchens had barricaded himself along with a woman identified as his girlfriend, deputies at the scene said.

The incident started at about 7 p.m., and Old Whiteoak Road was blocked off with fire trucks to keep people away from the scene.

A police S.W.A.T. team entered the home at 9:15 p.m. and an ambulance was called to the scene.
