Seniors Calendar



The Seniors Calendar lists activities and groups of interest to senior citizens. Please call the service agencies for information. UNIVERSITY SENIORS CLUB

Sponsored by University Health Care System, 4106 Columbia Road, at Flowing Wells Road in former Prompt Care building; 868-3231 or (800) 413-6652 to register and get times of events; membership required ($10, includes prescription discount).

SENIORS CLUB FITNESS PROGRAM: Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays beginning in September; Community Resource Center; taught by instructors certified by the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America; free in September, $2 each after; 868-3231.

HEALTH SCREENINGS: Blood pressure, glucose screenings, height and weight measurement; 9 a.m. to noon Wednesdays.

CHOLESTEROL SCREENING AND LIPID PROFILE: 9 a.m. to noon third Wednesdays, $5; requires 12-hour fast.

SENIOR ADVANTAGE

For people age 50 or older; offers bingo, canasta, bunco and health and educational programs at St. Joseph Hospital; $5 membership fee per year, discounts available; registration required; 481-7232.

SENIOR MOMENTS: For age 55 and older; 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays; $2 per meeting; 790-0588.

SPECIAL EVENTS

AARP SENIOR EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM: Jobs and training for workers are available for residents of Richmond, McDuffie, Columbia, Lincoln and Wilkes counties who are older than 55; accepting applications for Certified Nursing training; 722-4700.

DONATIONS NEEDED: University Hospital's Speech and Hearing Center requests donations of old, broken or discarded hearing aids for people in need; 774-8666.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: Seniors and Lawmen Together needs volunteers to assist the sheriff with administrative duties, Augusta-Richmond County Law Enforcement Center, 401 Walton Way; volunteers may choose days and hours of work; training provided; Walt Williams, 793-5174.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. or 1-5 p.m. one Saturday or Sunday a month, Phinizy Swamp Nature Park's visitor center; duties include greeting visitors and giving out literature; 828-2109.

SENIOR WHEELS USA: Power wheelchairs to senior citizens and the permanently disabled at no cost if they qualify (for those who cannot walk or self-propel in a standard wheelchair) (800) 246-6010.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: Match seniors with low-cost prescription help through the Georgia Cares program; flexible hours, training provided; Area Agency on Aging, 210-2029.

SENIOR FRIENDS
