A man charged with raping a McDuffie County woman was out on bond for a kidnapping charge in Richmond County at the time of the incident, authorities said Wednesday.
Michael R. Morgan, 21, who has been charged with rape in the sexual assault of a woman near Dearing on Tuesday, had been released from the Richmond County jail in mid-July, jail officials said.
Mike Seigler, the special agent in charge of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation's Thomson office, said Mr. Morgan kicked open the door of the woman's home, grabbed her and bound her before sexually assaulting her.
He said Mr. Morgan was formerly employed as a maintenance man where the victim lives but did not know her, and that he wore a mask during the assault.
Agent Seigler said Mr. Morgan was being held at the McDuffie County jail. Richmond County jail officials said Wednesday that Mr. Morgan was released July 19, after Judge John Baxter set bond of more than $16,000.
Richmond County sheriff's Investigator Bonnie Kalbskopf said Mr. Morgan tried to kidnap Rebecca Brown as she tried to enter her home in the 3100 block of Skinner Mill Road on July 17.
