Dessert shop relocates to bigger, active location

It's taken nearly six months, and she's been up until 4 in the morning getting it ready, but Kimberly Davis has moved her downtown eatery, The Dessert Shop Caf, to the corner of Broad and 10th streets.

"We originally intended to be in the space by Masters, then it was the end of April, then the middle of May, then we closed down about three weeks ago," she said. "We were planning to be closed for one week and then open the following Monday, but stuff didn't get fixed. It was painful."

The shop finally opened Aug. 13.

"I told everyone I don't care if we're not ready, I ordered groceries and they're not going to last," she said.

The new cafe differs from the old one, which Ms. Davis opened alongside the now-defunct Chow a block down Broad Street in February 2002. Whereas the old space encompassed 800 square feet and accommodated 20 people, the new space covers 2,000 square feet and can accommodate 50.

The menu has changed, too. In addition to the cafe's signature chicken salad, a full dinner menu will be offered, including lemon herb salmon, Cajun grilled shrimp. pasta alfredo and 15 sides.

Dessert will, of course, still be available.

Ms. Davis said the move stemmed from both a falling out with the owners of Chow, where the Dessert Shop had shared space, and a need to increase visibility.

"We wanted to be where there's more action, and there's more action down in this corner," she said.

Tentative hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Thursday; 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., dessert only 3:30-6 p.m., and dinner from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Friday; and noon to 3:30, dessert only from 3:30 to 6 p.m. and dinner 6 to 9: 30 p.m. on Saturday. Call 722-4937.
