Former Augusta Mayor McIntyre dies

Ed Marlow McIntyre Sr., Augusta's first and only black mayor, died Saturday afternoon after suffering from failed health, according to family members. He was 72.

His son, E. Marlow McIntyre Jr., said his father died at about 12:45 p.m. at University Hospital.

Mr. McIntyre was a longtime employee of the Pilgrim Health Life Insurance Co., was a member of the first graduating class of Lucy C. Laney High School and a Morehouse College graduate.

He is also survived by his wife of 46 years , Juanita Beard McIntyre; a daughter, Wanda (Keith) McRae of Gainesville, Ga.; another son, Dr. Ashley McIntyre, of Montgomery, Ala. ; and six grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete but are being handled by Mays Mortuary in Augusta, according to family members.
