Outdoors calendar



NOTE: All the listed events are open to the public, although membership in some organizations might be required.

  • THURSDAY, JULY 22: The Fishing with Ralph Barbee television show be aired nightly on Knology Channel 6 at 10:30 pm and Comcast will air it on Channel 66 Monday nights at 9:30 p.m. and on Thursday nights at 7:30 pm.
  • MONDAY, AUG. 2 TO FRIDAY, AUG. 6: The popular Woodsmanship and Hunter Education Camp will be held at the Audubon Society's Silver Bluff Center near Beech Island, S.C. Programs include outdoors skills; hunting tactics and others. Programs are held from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily. Tuition is $100 and graduates will be taken on a deer and hog hunt and dove shoot in September. For registration details, call Jody Childs at (803) 725-8712.
  • SATURDAY, AUG. 7: Swamp Saturday will be held at 9:30 a.m. at Phinizy Swamp Nature Park with volunteers leading a guided, 90-minute walk through wetlands. Bring bug spray. Call 828-2109 for more details.
  • TUESDAY, AUG. 12: A Meteor Shower Walk will be held at Phinizy Swamp Nature Park to allow visitors to enjoy the nocturnal swamp and also see the Perseid Meteor Shower. Cost is $5 or $3 for members. Call 828-2109.
  • SATURDAY, SEPT. 4: Swamp Saturday will be held at 9:30 a.m. at Phinizy Swamp Nature Park with volunteers leading a guided, 90-minute walk through wetlands. Bring bug spray. Call 828-2109 for more details.
  • SATURDAY, SEPT. 11: Join Ed Belinski's photography class and explore using the camera for close-ups of nature during a 9 a.m. program at Phinizy Swamp Nature Park. Bring camera, film, tripod, etc.. Cost is $3 for members and $5 for non-members. Call 828-2109 to register.
  • THURSDAY, SEPT. 17: A history lecture on the Phinizy Swamp area will be held at Phinizy Swamp Nature Park beginning with a bring-your-own picnic at 5 p.m. Call 828-2109 for details.
  • FRIDAY, SEPT. 24 TO SUN., SEPT. 26: The Georgia Trappers Association will hold its 24th Annual Convention at the Cherokee County Fairgrounds in Calhoun, Ga. For more details call Dan Eaton, 706-790-4495.
