'Chronicle' songwriting contest deadline is set

Do you have a song in your heart? Better yet, do you have a song on CD?

The Augusta Chronicle is once again sponsoring a singer/songwriter contest. As in years past. area musicians are invited to submit recordings of original music. All genres are welcome, and the only requirement is that the music must be self-penned and performed.

All submissions will be placed online and put to a popular vote. The four entries judged by Chronicle readers as their favorites, plus a single critic's pick, will perform in a live final round tentatively slated for Labor Day weekend and judged by a panel of celebrity judges. Finalists will be gauged on songwriting skill, performance and audience appeal. The winner will walk away with a profile, a CD gift pack and $400. Second place will receive $200, and third $100.

Consider this the official get set go. Submissions will be accepted until 5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 2. Previous winners and finalists in the contest are ineligible.
