Today in regional history:
July 14, 1940
Fire Chief John B. Kennedy, long considered the power behind the throne in Augusta politics, was unanimously proposed a candidate for mayor of Augusta in the next municipal election at the meeting of the Civil Service commission last night.
The proposal was brought by Colonel R.L. "Dick" Chambers, veteran member of the commission whose views have been often opposed by the other members of the body.
Chief Kennedy, shortly after being notified of the action of the commission, told The Chronicle that he had no statement to make "until I hear more from my friends."
