Duke waits for coach's decision

DURHAM, N.C. - When Duke's season ended with a Final Four loss to Connecticut in April, there was no indication that Mike Krzyzewski might have coached his last game with the Blue Devils.

Now, Duke fans and officials wait anxiously to find out whether the Hall of Famer will leave the elite program he has guided for 802 games in 24 years to become coach of the Los Angeles Lakers.

"I think people are honestly clueless about what's going to happen," Duke senior associate athletic director Chris Kennedy said Friday. "I don't think Mike knows what's going to happen right now."

Krzyzewski met with Los Angeles Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak on Thursday to discuss the NBA team's coaching vacancy. Lakers spokesman John Black refused to comment on reports that Krzyzewski was offered the job.

The 57-year-old Krzyzewski has led the Blue Devils to three national championships, and the school gave him a lifetime contract three years ago.

SUNS SIGN NASH: Point guard Steve Nash agreed to a five-year, $65 million deal with the Phoenix Suns on Thursday, leaving the Dallas Mavericks to return to the team that drafted him eight years ago.

The deal includes a "partial guarantee" for a sixth year, Nash's agent Bill Duffy said.

Nash shook hands on the deal with new owner Robert Sarver and Suns chairman Jerry Colangelo at a meeting in Dallas, Duffy said.

NBA rules prohibit Nash from signing the contract until July 14. Teams were allowed to begin talks with free agents late Wednesday.

He will give Phoenix an experienced playmaker ahead of young Leandro Barbosa. The move almost certainly removes the Suns from the competition for Los Angeles Lakers free agent Kobe Bryant.

  • Marquis Daniels agreed to a six-year contract worth roughly $38 million to stay with the Mavericks.
  • Daniels, who made the league minimum of $366,931 last season after going undrafted out of Auburn, will receive the midlevel exception of about $5 million this season, then have annual raises of 10 percent. The exact figures will be set by the league before July 14.

TORONTO HIRES ASSISTANTS: New Raptors coach Sam Mitchell added three assistant coaches to his staff Friday - Jim Todd, Jay Triano and Alex English.

Todd and Mitchell worked together the past two seasons as assistant coaches in Milwaukee. Todd has also been an assistant and an interim coach with the Los Angeles Clippers.

English is also Toronto's director of player development. He was an assistant coach with Philadelphia last season and Atlanta the year before.

Triano returns for this third season as a member of the Raptors' coaching staff.

CAMBY STAYS WITH DENVER: Denver took care of their top offseason priority, agreeing to terms with center Marcus Camby on a multiyear contract.

The deal, reached late Thursday, will be signed July 14 , said Camby's agent, Rick Kaplan. Terms weren't disclosed.

"Marcus thinks the franchise is headed in the right direction," Kaplan said Friday. "From the time he first arrived in Denver to where the franchise is now, it has improved exponentially and he thinks it's only going to get better."

SIXERS SIGN TOP DRAFT PICK: Philadelphia signed first-round pick Andre Iguodala on Friday.

Iguodala, the ninth overall selection, averaged 12.9 points and 8.4 rebounds last season at Arizona. The 6-foot-6 forward averaged 9.6 points, 6.6 rebounds and 3.4 assists during his two-year college career.

Also Friday, the team hired Joe Gallagher as an assistant coach.
