Henry Capers has been named Aiken Technical College's new basketball coach, the school announced Friday.
Capers replaces Charles Welch, who resigned in March.
A former player with the Harlem Globetrotters, Capers will assume his duties July 6.
"I am very pleased that we have been able to find someone of Mr. Capers' caliber to carry on the tradition of excellence in our basketball program," said Susan Graham, Aiken Tech president. "His experience will also serve him in the role of director of Student Life as he plans meaningful activities for our students."
Capers holds degrees from Berry College and Valdosta State, and he played and coached on the professional level with Meadowlark Lemon's Harlem All-Stars. He also coached basketball at Abraham Baldwin College in Tifton, Ga., and with the Atkinson County school system in Pearson, Ga.
Welch, the only coach in the 13-year history of the program, led the Knights to the national junior college tournament four times.
He cited personal reasons for stepping down, saying he wanted to focus on his family and teaching.
