NEW YORK -- The Cleveland Indians purchased the contract of outfielder Raul Gonzalez from Triple-A Buffalo on Tuesday and designated catcher Sandy Martinez for assignment.
Gonzalez was signed to a minor league contract on May 21 after being released by the New York Mets organization. He batted .341 in 21 games with seven home runs and 17 RBIs for Buffalo.
Gonzalez has played with the Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds and Mets and has a major league batting average of .237 for 161 games.
The Indians have 10 days to trade, release or send Martinez outright to the minors.
